This will be a short article just like the game. Sometimes when you download a game from itch.io it’s tough to determine just what you’re going to get. The size of the download is only 291 megabytes but if you’ve ever downloaded independently developed games the size of the download usually has no bearing on the size, length, or even quality of the game. Only Faces Remain is a short game which I think I experienced in about 10 minutes. The one thing Only Faces Remain gets absolutely right is that feeling of dread that starts to envelop you as you play the game. I think there were only 2 jump scares in the game but I was ready for neither and they both got me. The drab surroundings, the small almost claustrophobic area you’re allowed to explore, and the straight to the point visuals and story create that atmosphere of anxiety which makes you scoot to the edge of your seat in anticipation as you know the jump scare or whatever is coming.

Only Faces Remain is not an experience that I can simply label good or bad. Everything about the “game” is short and I think that added to the apprehension anxiety which had me wondering when “it’s” going to happen.

Check it out, enjoy (or try to anticipate) the jump scares, and then marvel as I did on how something so short on the extreme edge of what one might even call a game can be so effective at what it’s ultimately trying to achieve.

I’d like to see more from this independent developer and after writing this I’m going to go check and see if he has any more offerings. If so I will leave a comment to this article with the details.

You can download Only Faces Remain from itch.io and the following is a link directly to the creators page:

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

  1. I did check out the developers page and he does have 8 or 9 other offerings. Some of them are game types or genres that I don’t particularly enjoy but there are other horror games so I’m going to check some of them out. You can see the same by using the link to the developers page in the article above. Thanks.
