As I was perusing the available selections on Amazon Prime today, I ran across a movie called ‘The Gateway.’ I didn’t feel like researching anything or even watching a preview. Sometimes that process in itself can start a 2 hour long rabbit hole and I didn’t feel like going through to it today.

So I just just pressed play and hoped for the best.

The first thing I see as the movie starts is the ‘Uncorked’ logo. I guess it’s a movie production or acquisition company as I see that opener on many a feature from the various streaming services. It’s associated with I suppose what are known as ‘B‘ movies however, today I received a pleasant surprise. First off, within the first 30 minutes of the movie I became invested in the characters. There was an endearing realness as character development played out and I knew I needed to find out where this was all going.

The Gateway is a movie I would classify as ‘cosmic horror.’ It was very well done as far as how the story is presented and left in the most important part of cosmic horror; don’t tell your viewers everything. Let the story play out and let the viewers mind contend with what they are seeing. Let them form their own visions in their mind’s eye. When done just right, as The Gateway does, you come away from a movie feeling satisfied that you’ve watched something which was enjoyable, but more importantly, after the movie you might enjoy thinking about what you’ve just watched.

Directed by Jaron Henrie-McCrea. Written by Carys Edwards and Jaron Henrie-McCrea. Featuring Danni Smith, Tim Lueke, Martin Monahan, and a bunch of other actors I know little about. Following is the iMDB blurb:

When Danni, a burnt-out former hospice nurse, moves into a new apartment, she thinks she’s finally found the key to a simple, less traumatic life. But when things start to disappear through a strange portal in her bathroom wall, Danni realizes she’s discovered a gateway to the unknown that brings unimaginable horrors to this quiet apartment. Along with her co-worker Tim, Danni begins an investigation that leads to an unforgettable conclusion.—Uncork’d Entertainment
