While writing a completely different article I touched on the topic of games of which have had demo’s released or games that have had a significant amount of time and care put into them but ultimately were never developed further into a commercial release. While I was thinking about those games there are a couple demo’s or prologues of games that I still hope might be developed further into an actual game and Dark Fracture is one of those games. I have been waiting for years to see the commercial release but I admit I am starting to lose hope. Luckily what has been released in the form of the demo is sooo good I’m compelled to write an article because the demo is free and if you very much enjoy survival horror, or in this case, a bent more towards psychological horror, I can pretty much guarantee Dark Fracture will be something you’ll quickly gather interest in because the concept and gameplay of what’s available is simply outstanding.

Additionally, the write up’s from Steam and the publisher Twisted II Studio are also enticing. Here’s what the Steam synopsis has to say:

Dark Fracture is a psychological horror experience in which you explore an ever-changing world where reality and nightmares collide. Walk on the edge of madness in the shoes of a tormented soul as you descend into the darkest depths of the human psyche, and question everything you see.

Set in the late 90s in a forested area of the Northeastern USA, Dark Fracture brings you into the eerie environment of a body farm – a decomposition research facility. You enter the world as Edward, a lonely individual tormented by a tragic past, whose only solace is in the medicine that helps him to get through the day. Edward is barely able to cope with his issues, which are only intensified by the solitude of his workplace. He puts on a brave front and dutifully wakes up for work every day. His routine serves as his only anchor, but deep inside, trouble is simmering…

One night, while working the dreaded midnight shift, a chain of disturbing events draws Edward ever closer to losing his sanity, as the very fabric of reality seems to unravel and twist around him. The comfort of his self-inflicted apathy is being pulled from under his feet, and the cruel hand of fate is once more nudging him towards disaster – one that threatens to engulf Edward’s entire world in the shadows.

Is it merely Edward’s mind playing tricks on him? Or perhaps there truly is something darker clawing at his heels, threatening to drag him into the depths? You need to figure it out and the choices you make will shape the results of his terrifying tale.

🔦 An Obscure Tale: Unravel the mysteries surrounding the body farm while trying to survive the inexplicable events happening around you. Trust nothing and no one.

🔦 Complex Characters: Dig deeper into Edward’s psyche and meet other employees whose intentions are anything but clear – are they friend or foe?

🔦 Otherworldly Exploration: Experience visions of a terrifying parallel dimension. But does that world exist, or is it all in Edward’s mind?

🔦 Decision Making: The decisions you make in the game will impact Edward’s fate. Will you save or condemn him? Make your choices wisely.

🔦 Sanity Meter: Your sanity is the key to survival. Disturbing events will hinder your progress throughout the game, sapping away your resolve. Do all you can to tighten the grip on your fleeting sanity.

🔦 Procedurally Generated Paranormal Events: On top of being varied by your sanity meter, encounters and visions do not always happen at a set moment. Expect the unexpected during each playthrough.

🔦 Survival Horror Gameplay Elements: Search key items to help your progress through the adventure, and carefully manage resources to survive. And don’t stay in the dark!

🔦 Physics-based Puzzles: Interact with physical objects and carry or manipulate them to solve problems.

🔦 Dual Wielding: By wielding two items at once, you can strategize the complementary usage of your tools and overcome any obstacle – or die trying.

🔦 Artistic Inspiration: The rich and immersive environments of the game take inspiration from the surrealist paintings of Zdzisław Beksiński as well as the flesh-like creations of H.R. Giger.

Steam Synopsis

This is actually the first time I’ve read through that from the Steam store page and even that sounds good. From that description alone I would have downloaded the demo.

I first encountered Dark Fracture approximately 4+ years ago from the date of this article. I’ve played through the demo a few times to completion and still can’t get over (A) how good it was and (B) the fact that it is still touted as in development. There have been a few updates to the demo including updated assets and extending game play. Over the years there have been announcements to the effect of the game still being in development but I have not seen any traction or updates in the last couple of years. I just now logged into my Steam account and was looking up some details of the game and it seems I reviewed the game on the Steam web site back in 2022. I should probably give up hope but I recently played a game which had a harrowing 13 year development cycle (Routine) so you sometimes just never know.

There’s really not much more I can say about the demo other than that it was excellent enough for me to keep hanging on to hope that one day the game gets released. If you read the Steam synopsis above you can tell a lot more of the story has been developed than what you get in the game. The back story being built and the environs of the demo being the “body house” of the body farm just makes my mind reel with just how much can actually be done with the game. I hope the developers continue but even if the game never materializes the demo alone is definitely worth playing.
