Parasomnium No REM is the third entry in the short form horror games by independent developers I’m reviewing this month. It’s another horror themed spookfest and it’s been kitted out for the Halloween season with Jack-O-Lanterns, candles, and candy corn for you to discover as you become familiar with your surroundings. So far Parasomnium No REM has the best graphics of the games I’ve reviewed this month. but it’s a simple game that you should be able to complete in 30 to 45 minutes.
Parasomnium No REM starts you off inside the foyer of your house. Your first task is to quickly orient yourself and get to the bedroom, as you’ll be requested to take your medicine and get some sleep in shortly. The house comprises a downstairs area and an upstairs area. Upstairs has the main hallway plus an offshoot hallway where the houses bedrooms and bathrooms are located. You’ll need to discover your bedroom and while doing that you’ll pick up the houses layout. The house feels large but the area’s you’ll be traversing are easily navigable and a few back and forths will let you know all the places you can go. You’ll be looking for items, notes, and environmental cues which will set you up for the coming horrors. There’s a couple of puzzles that need to be solved. Nothing Mensa level but you will need to keep your wits about you and keep a logical frame of mind.
The game claims to feature a never before explored theme, that of sleepwalking. First off I don’t think this is quite true but it’s of little matter. Parasomnium No REM features standard WASD movement and mouse look. You’ll use the primary mouse button for opening doors, picking up items, and interacting with the environment. The secondary mouse button gives you super sleepwalking powers to discover clues you won’t necessarily find while you’re walking around awake..
10 years have passed since the day your family disappeared. After several nights of insomnia, you decide to see a doctor for a solution. When you get home, you take sleeping pills to sleep better. However, they cause sleepwalking episodes that revive your childhood traumas, making sleep no longer a safe place…

There are minimal jump scares and the game is a self contained single file executable you can play anytime. As mentioned above the house is not too big or spread out but there are plenty of twists and turns and dead-end area’s. Once you’ve completed the final puzzle on the second floor, another area will open up on the first floor. All in all I didn’t hate it and Parasomnium No REM was more captivating than The Condition, the previous independent short horror I reviewed.
