Very Minimal Spoilers – Description of prelude

I discovered another fun little morose horror tale by the name of Beezel on Amazon Prime yesterday. Sure., it may look like B grade budget fodder from the start, but don’t let that fool you. Beezel very much reminded me of a movie I saw not too long ago by the name of Barbarian, which also was a fun albeit big budget tale.

Over six tumultuous decades, three unwitting guests of a cursed New England home stumble upon a sinister secret dwelling beneath its floors – an eternal witch with an insatiable thirst for the souls of the living. -Amazon Prime Synopsis

The best way I can describe Beezel is that the story is told in 3 parts. There is a short prelude where a father is not paying attention and allows his 5 year old son to get eaten by the entranced mother. The prelude in fact is a bit diabolical. At first we’re shown the mother and son happily playing in the yard. Some time goes by and we come to a night where the father is putting the son to bed. The father leaves the room and then the son hears some tapping coming from the bathroom. He goes to the bathroom, opens the cabinet under the sink, and there’s a trapdoor at the bottom. The boy then opens that trap door and sees’ his mother down there, in some dungeon like setup. She says she’s hungry and asks her son for a snack, but something is amiss, other than the trapdoor under the sink cabinet. Her eyes look funny. The little boy runs off to the kitchen, selects an apple, and runs back to the bathroom. He passes the apple to his mother and a few seconds later, well, the boy is snatched half in half out the trap door under the sink and all we hear are squelching sounds for our imaginations.

It seems the father was aware of what was going on with moms and we hear his sobs as he mourns for his son whose legs and feet are still dangling half in half out of the trapdoor onto the bathroom floor. We don’t see his upper body, yet.

Yeah, a bit gruesome, and I’m always taken aback a bit when children are involved. I have a son myself and it’s just difficult to watch little kids being hurt, or eaten. But I guess that’s my lot in life now being an aficionado and lover of horror.

What follows is the story of that house told over six decades in a 3 part story.

There’s very minimal special effects in Beezel and what effects there are are all practical, in camera so to speak. There’s really no build up to the horror in this one as you’re pretty much prepared for the rest of the movie after the 5 year old boy is, uh, squelched.

I enjoyed Beezel very much as a low budget production. It did so much with so little in the scares department I had no choice but to admire the movie for what it was. The soundtrack is great and there’s this one part that’s reminiscent of Tangerine Dream and added a real creepy vibe to everything that was going on. It’s just a fun little creepy story you won’t have to think much for.

Finally, the ending is super creepy and if you decide to check Beezel out, you’ll discover that for yourself. Beezel is just a great little story told with no holds barred in a very easy to understand way.

Beezel was directed by Aaron Fradkin. Written by Aaron and Victoria Fradkin. Featuring Bob Gallagher, LeJon Woods, Caroline Quigley, Victoria Fradkin, and Nicolas Robin. Beezel was released in 2024 with a running time of 1 hour and 21 minutes. IMDb gives it a rating of 4.9 out of 10. I give it a solid 6.
