An A-List Girl clique starts a secret cult where each of them must embody one of the seven deadly sins. They realize there’s more to their small religious town after they go missing one by one.
That’s the IMDb synopsis. The Sinners was directed by Courtney Paige. Written by Courtney Paige, Erin Hazelhurst, and Madison Ryne Smith. Featuring Kaitlyn Bernard, Brenna Llewellyn, and Brenna Coates. Released in 2020 with a running time of 1 hour and 36 minutes. IMDb rating of 4.2 out of 10.
The Sinners, a movie about the trials and tribulations of 7 Catholic school girls notorious for their ‘ways.’ So notorious in fact the rest of the school refers to them as ‘The Sins.’
Now here’s a movie the old woke me for sure never would have watched. Obviously a teeny bopper flick aimed at under appreciated or over idolized high school girls. We’ll probably be treated to subtle plays on morality to get it’s “intended” audience to “think”, before their lives go horribly wrong, too.
The Sinners begins with a tragedy. Then we’re whisked away back in time to the start of another school day and we get introduced to each of the ‘The Sins’ by first name. Their sin names of pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth are identified at that time as well. I’ve always been a fan of horror movies which include biblical lore and that’s no different here. Where at first I was hesitant to watch the movie, I’m now intrigued at how the movie is going to play out. If I lived in opposite land I would say all 7 girls are hideous and unattractive and should probably carry around paper bags when in public. But this is not opposite land.
“The Sins” are an overarching “cult” and force to be reckoned with at their Catholic school. They can be thought of as “mean girls” whose popularity can be construed as the “in crowd.” Admired by most, and hated by the rest, they run around school like royalty and demand subservience. A case in point. The girls make it out to the section of school where the cheerleaders are practicing. They need this patch of ground for a private meeting and demand the cheerleaders leave. The cheerleaders give some pushback and mention they’ve reserved the school grounds for their cheerleader practice but “The Sins” will not be denied. They eventually chase off the cheerleaders and sit down for their “private” meeting.
The movie plays out for a little while and shows how hateful our girls can be. It turns out someone has told the school authorities about “The Sins”. The girls think its a member of their own group with some ambiguous information discovered in one of the girls private journals. At first the girls put together a bible study meeting. But as the meeting starts one of the girls, Aubrey, notice they are performing a demonic ritual. She starts crying but gets’ bullied by the rest of the girls into silence. They believe they’ve found their traitor.
So one day, they kidnap her, tie her up, and drive her out to a lake, take her out of the trunk of a car, throw her on the ground and start kick beating her. One of the other girls thinks things have gone a little too far so they regroup for a little chat. When they turn their attention back to Aubrey, she’s disappeared.
This is where the light hearted mean girl fantasy setup turns into one of dark tragedy and revenge. Aubrey is found some days later near the lake, dead, with a rose in her mouth.
It’s at this point I end the spoiler and let you decide if you want to watch the movie or not. This drastic turn of events is where I am now at in the movie and look forward to the rest of the movie and how it all plays out. If you like nice a twist, a devil worshipping rampaging murderer, and some fake gotchas, I think you’ll enjoy The Sinners as much as I did.
Thanks for taking the time to read this mini spoiler and if this sounds like something you’d like to see, I found it on Amazon Prime but I’m sure it’s playing on other streaming sites as well. IMBb gives it a 4.2, I give it a solid 6.0.
