After spending literal weeks dredging through YouTube short form (15-45 minutes long) video’s I’ve finally found one worthy of writing something about. I mostly target the horror based video’s, but I’m not adverse to looking through themes of science fiction, requited love, or even crime dramas, as long as the stories are good.

Aftermath definitively answers a question many stories pose. Neither the story or me in this blog is going to define that question, but I believe after a viewing of Aftermath you’ll know exactly which question is being asked and what the answer to that question is.

Wo, that even chills me a little. But with good measure. Is Aftermath a horror? Is it it a drama? Is there ill requited love? The answer to all those simple questions is a definitive yes.

I take great care in choosing these short form YouTube videos for my site, and to date the articles with the highest views are in fact the other 2 articles I wrote on short YouTube horror videos which I found particularly noteworthy, like this one. Just for reference, those other two short horrors and the articles are The Chair and Portrait of God. Just for clarity, the videos’ are not unique to YouTube. It just happens to be the place where I came across them.

In no way is Aftermath groundbreaking. It’s not particularly well shot, though there are some great shots throughout. It’s far from a perfect short video movie and there’s nothing that really stands out in particular. It’s the story as a whole that made me sit back for a good 10-15 minutes thinking could it really be that simple? Could life long ideals turn at the drop of a hat and turn us into that which we abhor? I’ve never been faced with the situation Aftermath lays out and though the setting is dystopian and dreary, it need not be. I think throughout history this story has been played out more times than we could possibly imagine and I think that’s what makes Aftermath such a great story. Good men plagued on all sides by the dark and damp hollow halls that is our waking soul. I’m sure for many it would take much less than the loss of a loved one to embark on a lifelong journey of depravity and depression but for humanities’ sake let’s hope the extreme cases don’t become the norm. Who really knows what darkness lies behind unknowing eyes. Walk a mile in another man’s shoes…
