This is a bit of a departure from the usual horror reviews I write. I have to admit I have a penchant for these Mission Impossible movies and they’re somewhat of a private vice. I thoroughly enjoy them, enjoy the variety of actors, as well as the regular cast, and who doesn’t enjoy long, drawn out car chases in scenic locales. Situations seemingly impossible to be extricated from is par for the course when it comes to Mission Impossible and they’ve put together an impossible to deny series. To make sure of this, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning is only part one of an apparently 2 part series. and I wouldn’t be surprised if part 2 was just the middle of this particular series. But that of course is just pure speculation.

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning is a long movie I’ve just discovered. I decided to take a break, as I do, to watch a little YouTube (I know, right?). As I flipped back over to the Amazon Prime tab checking the time to see where I am timewise in the movie, I’ve discovered that I’ve been watching Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning for an hour and eleven minutes, with an hour and thirty five minutes remaining! Woa! 2 hours and 45 minutes. Well fortunately, I don’t mind long movies as long as the time is broken up by car chases, gun fights, or other Mission Impossible stuff every 15 minutes or so.

Now one might say if you’ve seen one Mission Impossible movie, you’ve seen them all. But I would argue this is simply not true. From excellent oscar worthy performances from the likes of Philip Seymour Hoffman (Mission Impossible III), to iconic motorcycles battles (pick one), to truly spectacular sleights of hand and movie twists, the Mission Impossible series of movies, which is at 7 or 8 by now, is a series that’s fun to watch and just keeps giving. We get to watch great actors doing their thing and one of things I’ve noticed about movies lately is actors are a lot of the time not believable in their roles. I chock this up to either poor acting or maybe even poor actors chosen for reasons other than their ability to act. Now I’m not saying every scene and every actor are award worthy, but we’ve seen many great actors come and go, some even revived, over the ever expanding montage that is Mission Impossible and if nothing else, I always find the movies entertaining and watchable.

I was never a Tom Cruise fan but oddly enough became a Tom Cruise fan after his hilarious and unforgettable role in Tropic Thunder. I think the greasiness of that particular character endeared a lot of people to Mr. Cruise and let us know that despite his weirdness and shortcomings (that whole Scientology thing) he’s a great actor and if we’re to judge him on anything, it should definitely be his ability to act.

So with that this review of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning comes to an end. As this is just part one of a multi-part series, I will write another article on part 2 when it’s released in the summer of 2025.

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning was released in 2023 and was directed by Christopher McQuarrie. Written by Bruce Geller, Christopher McQuarrie and Erik Jendressen. Starring Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, and a multitude of great actors including Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Henry Czerny, Charles Parnell and a slew of other great actors. Here’s the iMDB blurb:

Ethan Hunt and the IMF team must track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity if it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than the mission — not even the lives of those he cares about most.
