I just completed watching Late Night with the Devil literally within five minutes of starting this article. Once I realized I had access to the movie via a 7 day free trial on AMC+ I immediately put it on because of all the hype that I have been hearing about it on various media sources.. I originally signed on to the AMC+ free trial a few days ago to watch V/H/S 85. V/H/S 85 was all right but nothing to write home about. In fact it’s far from my favorite in the V/H/S series though I did enjoy it, mostly. But of course, this is not about V/H/S 85.

Is Late Night with the Devil a hardcore horror offering? No. It is horror though right? Yes. I enjoyed the movie and there was some good build up towards the end. Now that I think about it it’s funny I mentioned V/H/S 85. It had a very V/H/S feel to it at the ending. It was definitely a fun movie to watch with some semi interesting characters. But I do have 1 gripe with it.

During some expositing of exposition an event in the life of the main character was touched upon. In fact the event was portrayed through quick and fleeting flashback scenes. When the event in question came up again, there was nothing further said about it. Unless I somehow missed it on my first viewing, but I don’t think so. Had this event been expanded on a little bit I think it would have made a more interesting movie. But because the way the movie ended without ironing out this one little wrinkle, it left me wanting for closure and I felt the movie to be incomplete.

It’s hard to say if there’s enough left of the movie for a sequel but in my estimation, there is not. I apologize for being so cryptic with this so called “event” but I’ve gotten use to writing no spoiler reviews that I don’t want to be too specific . It would be nice though if there was some clarification. Enough was said that I could imagine what happened during this “event” but in this case I’d rather know than let my imagination fill in the blanks.

I’ll touch on it a little bit. What the hell happened in the forest? I’m imagining a deal with the devil was struck in the forest. But this is me filling in some blanks. It’s possible others who watch the movie will think the same, or maybe will construe something entirely different and that will be that. But it’s a little too simple for me. If I go with what I think, it would turn out that the protagonist suffered 3 times for a little fame and glory and the way the movie played it out just didn’t satisfy my need for dread horror. Just doesn’t make sense to me why the movie didn’t offer the explanation. The pieces just didn’t fit together neatly enough for me.

Anyways…

I’m sure all horror fans will be going to watch this movie if for no other reason to see if it lives up to all the hype. Again I will state that I did enjoy Late Night with the Devil, for the most part. I think the main character did a great job, and there were other character interactions which definitely pushed some buttons with my psyche and had some with fun with my emotions, but it just wasn’t enough. It’s a PG-13 horror I think is the best way I can sum it up. Maybe I can do one better. If I could choose one word to sum up the movie for me, that word would be “anticlimactic”.
