Trench 11 and Deathwatch were a couple of movies I watched today. Horror stories based on World War II events in all their amalgamations and guises have turned up in all shapes and sizes ever since the end of the “great” war. Could be forced remembrance of tragedy so we as humans don’t make such mistakes again, or more likely a universe without purpose can yield no bounds so the remembrance of our history should be lessons. So, in that vein, I’ll tell you what I enjoyed about both of the movies.

Both of these titles have an element in common. Trench warfare. However, from there both of the movies diverge to very different plots. I’m not going to get into too many details about either of the movies as I prefer to write no spoiler reviews. I immensely enjoyed both movies and one of the reasons is the excellent character development shored up by excellent acting. Additionally, the action, the period props and backgrounds, and the primal tragedies of war are put on full display. I highly recommend watching both Trench 11 and Deathwatch with headphones or at the very least a good sound system so as to bring the war right into your room and psyche.

In 1917, in the Western front, a group of survivors of the British Company Y reach the most forward German trench in a foggy night. They capture a German soldier that advises that evil is in the trench, forcing the soldiers to kill each other, and asks them to leave the place. Only the private Charlie Shakespeare listens and helps the prisoner, while a supernatural force scares and makes the soldiers insane.

So if you’re into some intense somewhat overdone fictional history pieces about the horrors of war, one with a paranormal aspect to it, and the other a solid story with some body horror for those who are into that.
